“We don’t get wounded alone, and we don’t get healed alone.” – Carl Jung
Entering therapy can feel daunting, especially when you’re not sure what to expect. It can take time to understand how to fully engage in the process and discover the best way for it to work for you. The experience requires an openness to explore things inside and outside of your awareness, a motivation for things to be different and a courage to go to uncomfortable places. The work is ultimately done by you and here’s how you can get the most out of your therapy sessions: —
**1. Punctuality and Attendance** Consistency is key. Regular sessions help create momentum and ensure you’re receiving the support needed for meaningful change. Commit to prioritizing your appointments—show up and be present.
**2. Talking About Therapy** It’s natural to feel hesitant about sharing that you’re in therapy, but discussing it with trusted people can be surprisingly supportive. If something from therapy affects you, feel free to bring it up in our sessions. It can spark valuable insights.
**3. Therapy vs. Advice** Therapists rarely offer direct advice. Therapy is about helping you explore options and empower you to make choices. You are the expert of your own life, and I’m here to walk alongside you as you navigate change.
**4. Understanding the Therapy Approach** Different therapists use different approaches. Take some time to explore what feels right for you. As a Transactional Analyst, my approach is outlined on my website—learning about it can help you feel more confident in the process.
**5. Embracing Change** Change is hard, and it can feel uncomfortable. But therapy is here to support you in making those changes. Your willingness to engage with and embrace change is essential for growth.
**6. Putting in Effort** The more effort you invest in therapy—whether through reflection or trying new things—the better your outcomes will be. Active participation is crucial to seeing results.
**7. Openness to the Process** I use a range of techniques tailored to your journey. Some may feel unfamiliar, but approach them with curiosity. Often, this openness leads to unexpected growth and insights.
**8. Facing the Fear of Change** It’s normal to fear that change might take something away from you. But therapy isn’t about making you someone else—it’s about helping you become the best version of yourself. Together, we’ll ensure any change feels authentic and empowering.
**9. Making Notes** Therapy can bring ‘aha’ moments—those moments of clarity that stick with you. Writing them down helps track progress. You might also find journaling between sessions valuable for deeper reflection.
**10. Being Open to Questions** I may ask questions that seem abstract or unrelated, but they’re designed to open up deeper exploration. Stay open to where the conversation leads—there’s more to uncover.
**11. Be Honest** Honesty is essential in therapy. If you’re uncertain or uncomfortable, it’s okay to express that. This is a safe, non-judgmental space. Openly sharing your frustrations or discomfort will only help you grow.
**12. Vulnerability is Key** Therapy requires a level of trust and vulnerability. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s essential for healing. The more honest you are, the more effective therapy will be.
**13. Therapy Can Be Tough** Some sessions may bring up painful or difficult emotions, which is normal. Over time, this process gets easier. If something feels too much, we can always adjust the pace to what feels right for you.
**14. Prepare for Sessions** Before each session, take a moment to reflect on what’s on your mind. What’s important to you right now? This preparation will help ensure that you get the most out of each conversation.
**15. Provide Feedback** Your feedback matters. If something’s working well, let me know so we can continue on that path. If something’s not working, speak up. Your input shapes the direction of our work together. —
**Take the First Step Towards Change**
I was told once that clients don’t go to client school; it can take time for clients to know how the process works and how transformational this can be. This is designed to give you a flavour of what is required, however there is no substitute for getting into the room and diving in.
